My Journey as a Writer.
As I write this in 2025, it has been around six years since I began my writing journey. I actually started back in 2018 with short stories and poems here and there. But it was in early 2019 that I began posting regularly on the YourQuote App. That’s also when I started using my pen name—Shumon.
There’s a personal story behind that name. My father used a pen name during his college days—Shurhid, which means "one with a good heart." Inspired by that, I adopted Shumon, which carries a similar meaning. Writing under a pseudonym gave me a sense of freedom and comfort. I began with short quotes and gradually moved on to poems, micro-stories, short fiction, and even published a “book” on Wattpad under the same name. It was an exciting and formative experience for me.
As my love for cinema grew, I naturally began exploring screenwriting—learning how to write scripts and craft the kinds of stories I truly wanted to bring to life. I also experimented with audio stories through various YouTube channels, always sharing original work. The appreciation I received encouraged me, and soon, some of my friends started joining in on the creative process as well.
Around the same time, I launched my own blog on WordPress, using my pet name. I was genuinely proud to see my (pen) name on a website domain—it felt like a milestone. But soon after, I experienced my first major writer’s block. It lasted for over six months, and not being able to write felt like torture. During this phase, I discovered freewriting—an exercise that helped me immensely. Through it, I wrote a collection of stories titled ‘My Unfavourite’, which, ironically, became my most favourite set of stories. That period helped me find my voice and understand the kind of stories I loved writing. Things got better, and I returned to writing consistently for almost a year.
Then came another major writer’s block—this one lasting over a year. It was during this time that I began focusing more on writing stories I hoped to turn into audio pieces or films someday (at least that was the dream back then). Looking back now, I’m incredibly grateful for this journey—it has shaped me into the person I am today.
Over the last six years, I’ve written in many forms and across a variety of genres—copywriting, creative writing, blog posts, poetry, short stories, micro-fiction, one-liners, quotes, novellas, and more. Writing has not only been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it has also opened the path toward pursuing my dream of filmmaking—of telling stories that are personal, meaningful, and mine.
With every story I wrote, in some form or another, I got one step closer to doing what I’ve always wanted. My love for all things creative—whether it’s photography, filmmaking, or storytelling—has been shaped by this journey. I love that I can think of a character and bring them to life just by scribbling a few lines on paper.
I’m deeply grateful for the ability to express my voice and share the stories that matter most to me.
